Dental Implant Compared to Real Tooth?

Image of a dental professional showing a patient that a dental implant is affordable and a good fit for her, at Stephen L Ruchlin DDS.
Dental implants have been the most reliable method of replacing damaged or missing teeth for nearly 30 years. Dental implants enable you to laugh and eat normally since they are natural teeth. Apart from being a reliable tooth restoration option, they are the strongest and most durable tooth replacement option. Some patients wonder how a dental implant compares with a real tooth.

At Stephen L Ruchlin DDS we have a group of trustworthy and experienced dentists who are committed to offering quality dental health services. We have invested in modern and advanced equipment to help make dental implant procedures fast and efficient.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a structure that helps replace the missing tooth. It is made up of screw-like devices that a dentist will insert into the jawbone, acting as an anchor of the crown. An abutment helps in connecting the dental implant with the artificial tooth. Crowns are custom-made and fit well into the patient’s mouth, taking the place of the missing tooth. It looks, feels, and functions like real teeth.

Dental Implant Restoration

Dental implant restoration is a teeth replacement form comprising an abutment, implant, and artificial tooth. Depending on the number of teeth replaced, restoration can be a denture, dental bridge, or dental crown. The dental implant is a post positioned onto the jawbone either below or on top of the missing tooth. It acts as the tooth root of the crown. The abutment is attached to the implant and helps connect the crown to the implant.

Dental Implants vs. Bridges

Dental implants consist of a small titanium screw fixed to the jawbone and a crown placed on it to act as restored teeth. A dental bridge fills in the gap where there is a missing tooth. Surgery will have to be performed for a dental implant to take place. This explains why they are not suitable for patients with diabetes or high blood pressure.
Dental implants are only recommended for patients who have good overall health. Implants are durable due to the high quality of materials used in making them. Bridges are made from acrylic, which must be replaced every five to eight years.

Implants vs. Dentures

Dental implants are complex procedures, making them more time-consuming and costly than dentures. High-quality materials are used to make dental implants very strong and durable. Dentures are made from acrylic, meaning they have a shorter lifespan when compared to dental implants. Dentures cost less when compared to dental implants. They will have to be replaced every five to eight years.

Dental implants are not suitable for those who smoke, have diabetes that is not properly managed, or have recently had radiotherapy on the jaw area. Dentures are for any person. When suffering from gum disease, our dentists will first treat it before they install dental implants or dentures.
